Roam OCPI is Plugsurfing’s standards-based approach to EV roaming, designed to help charge point operators connect to a broad European roaming network through one technical integration. Built on OCPI 2.2.1, it enables CPOs to expand driver access while continuing to work with their existing backend infrastructure.
One example of Roam OCPI in production is Electra, a fast-growing European ultra-fast charging network with operations across France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Czechia.
Scaling roaming without adding complexity
For charge point operators expanding across multiple markets, roaming can quickly become complex. Traditional approaches often require multiple bilateral agreements, custom integrations, operational processes for each partner, and ongoing reconciliation work.
For fast-growing networks, this can create friction at exactly the point when speed and scalability matter most.
Roam OCPI simplifies this by providing access to Plugsurfing’s roaming network through one standards-based integration. Through Plugsurfing, CPOs can connect to a network of more than 800 charging operators across Europe, giving drivers access to more than 1 million charge points across 26 countries.
For chargepoint operators, this means broader charging access can be made available to drivers without requiring a full rebuild of existing systems or the need to manage roaming complexity entirely in-house.
Built on open standards
Roam OCPI is based on OCPI 2.2.1, an open protocol designed to support interoperability across the EV charging ecosystem.
This standards-based approach is important because it allows charging networks to scale more efficiently. Instead of relying on proprietary integrations or bespoke technical work for every roaming relationship, CPOs can use a cleaner, more repeatable model for connecting to roaming partners.
The result is a more scalable approach to roaming that supports both operational efficiency and a better driver experience.
Managed operations behind the scenes
Roaming is not only a technical challenge. Once integrations are live, operators also need to manage invoicing, reconciliation, settlement, and day-to-day operational processes.
Roam OCPI is designed to reduce this burden. Plugsurfing manages the operational complexity behind the scenes, helping CPOs expand roaming access while maintaining control over their pricing and customer experience.
For drivers, the experience is simple: broader access to charging across Europe.
For CPOs, the benefit is a roaming model that is easier to connect, easier to operate, and ready to scale.
Why this matters for the EV charging industry
Utilization remains one of the key priorities for charge point operators. As networks grow, drivers need confidence that they can access charging not only within one network, but across a wider ecosystem.
At the same time, CPOs need solutions that help them expand reach without slowing down deployment or adding unnecessary complexity to their teams.
Electra’s use of Roam OCPI demonstrates how standards-based roaming can work in a live production environment. It shows that CPOs can connect through open standards, work with existing systems, and provide drivers with broader European charging access through a managed roaming model.
As EV adoption continues to grow, scalable roaming will play an important role in making public charging simpler, more accessible, and more reliable for drivers across Europe.
Roam OCPI is one step toward that future: open, standards-based, and built for operators scaling across markets.
