How Energy Attribute Certificates work
When you plug in, electricity flows from the grid. This comes from a mix of renewable and non-renewable sources. To support clean energy, Plugsurfing secures Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) equal to the amount of electricity you’ve used.
Each EAC proves that one megawatt-hour of renewable electricity was generated and fed into the grid. The certificates we secure come from UK wind farms. By matching your consumption with these certificates, we’re backing renewable energy and showing demand for clean power.
Why wind power in the UK?
The UK is a global leader in wind energy, particularly offshore wind. When you charge with Plugsurfing, you’re backing the renewable source that powers Britain’s clean energy transition.
What this means for you
You don’t have to change anything. Charge exactly as you do today with your Plugsurfing app or card.
The physical electricity at charge points comes from the grid mix. We match your consumption with Energy Attribute Certificates from UK wind farms, ensuring the same amount of certified wind generation is accounted for on your behalf.
Fine print
- Valid for Plugsurfing and Polestar Charge users
- Energy Attribute Certificate matching applies only to charging sessions in the United Kingdom made through Plugsurfing from X October to 31 December 2025
- Matching is carried out using Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) from UK wind farms. For every kilowatt-hour consumed by Plugsurfing drivers, an equivalent certificate from wind generation is secured.
- EACs represent the environmental attributes of renewable electricity generation. The physical electricity at charge points comes from the grid mix, which includes both renewable and non-renewable sources.
About our renewable energy partner
Plugsurfing has partnered with Becour to match your charging with renewable energy certificates. Becour works directly with UK renewable energy producers to secure Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) that prove renewable electricity was generated and fed into the grid. For every kilowatt-hour you charge, Becour purchases equivalent certificates on our behalf, creating a transparent record of renewable generation matched to your consumption.
Get started
Open your Plugsurfing app, find a charger near you, and plug in. Your next UK charge will be backed by Energy Attribute Certificates from British wind farms.
FAQ
1. What does “backed by UK wind” mean?
When you charge your EV in the UK through Plugsurfing, we secure Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) from British wind farms equal to the amount of electricity you use. These certificates prove that the same amount of renewable electricity was generated and fed into the grid.
2. Does my car receive electricity directly from a wind farm?
No. The power that flows into your car comes from the national grid, which mixes electricity from many sources. Matching your consumption with EACs ensures that an equivalent amount of certified wind power is added to the grid on your behalf.
3. Is this offer available everywhere in the UK?
Yes. Any public charging session made in the United Kingdom through the Plugsurfing app or card is included.
4. How long does the campaign run?
From 14 October to 31 December 2025. Every charging session you make in the UK during this period is matched 1:1 with renewable energy certificates from British wind farms.
5. Do I need to do anything to take part?
No extra steps needed. Just charge as usual with your Plugsurfing app or charging card. We handle the renewable matching automatically.
6. What are Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs)?
EACs are official records that represent the environmental attributes of renewable electricity generation. One EAC equals one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable power produced and fed into the grid. By securing these certificates, we can link your electricity use to certified renewable generation.
7. Why wind energy?
The UK is a world leader in wind power, especially offshore wind. By focusing on UK wind, we highlight the country’s strongest renewable source and directly support local clean-energy producers.
8. Who is Plugsurfing’s renewable energy partner?
We’ve partnered with Becour, a specialist in renewable energy tracking. Becour works with UK producers to source Energy Attribute Certificates and create transparent records that prove renewable generation has been matched to your charging sessions.
9. Does this change how much I pay for charging?
No, there’s no change to pricing. The renewable energy matching is included automatically for all UK sessions during the campaign period.
10. Can I see which sessions were matched?
At the moment, matching happens automatically in the background. We’ll share updates and results after the campaign to show the total amount of renewable energy supported by Plugsurfing drivers.
